Freightliner’s Cascadia™ Designated SmartWay®-Certified

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – March 27, 2008 – Freightliner Trucks today announced that the Cascadia™ has been designated as SmartWay®-certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Cascadia marks the third Freightliner Class 8 truck – along with the Columbia® and Century Class® S/T – to earn this certification.

SmartWay is a voluntary program for the transportation industry that establishes incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Trucks that earn the SmartWay designation can be 10 to 20 percent more fuel efficient and up to 90 percent cleaner than comparable models.

“Freightliner’s Run Smart philosophy – the platform on which we developed the Cascadia – is to be the most productive, efficient, and driveable truck on the market,” said Melissa Kellogg, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “Run Smart perfectly complements the SmartWay initiative.”

Freightliner offers spec packages that make it effortless for fleets and owner-operators to participate in the SmartWay program. To be SmartWay-certified, trucks must feature an engine that is model year 2007 or newer; fuel-tank side fairings on the tractor; integrated cab-high roof fairing; tractor-mounted cab side extenders; aerodynamic mirrors and bumpers; and low rolling-resistance tires.

Customers must also spec their vehicles with auxiliary power units (APUs) or other idle-reduction technology. To make it even easier for customers to be part of the SmartWay initiative, Freightliner offers the battery-powered NITE anti-idling system. To complement this technology, Freightliner also is introducing the factory installed RestSmart™ APU system, which is based on Thermo King’s renowned technology.

The Cascadia, which was introduced in May 2007 and is the most aerodynamic Class 8 vehicle available today, was developed and tested in Freightliner’s proprietary, state-of-the-art wind tunnel. The wind tunnel is used to design products that provide superior aerodynamics, reduce drag and maximize fuel economy – key principles of the SmartWay program.

“The Cascadia, Century Class S/T and Columbia already offer performance features that set our trucks apart from the competition,” Kellogg said. “By adding SmartWay into the mix, not only do we help the environment, we improve our customers’ bottom-line.”
