Bridging American and European technology, Freightliner proprietary axles provide market-leading durability, performance and value. Specifically designed for the North American Market, our axles use standard wheel end parts so you can use the same brakes, hubs, and wheel bearings available for any axle. Furthermore, our axles offer valuable weight savings over the competition - up to 28 lbs with our front axles and 128 lbs with our rear axles. Freightliner’s “Best In Class” warranty allows 100% warranty coverage for all knuckle parts including king pins. Additional benefits of Freightliner proprietary axles and suspensions include:
Rack and Pinion Steering
  • Our rack and pinion steering is the first of its kind in the industry.
  • Because it is mounted to the front axle, the system temperature remains cooler, therefore improving the durability of seals and hoses.
  • 45 pounds lighter than a comparable integral gear system with spring suspensions.
  • With a more direct steering feel, driving becomes easier and driver fatigue is reduced.

Steer Axles
  • Needle bearings replace bushings for greater reliability, less maintenance and reduced tire wear.
  • Steering and tie rod arms designed for maximum 55-degree wheel-cut for added maneuverability.
  • A combination of friction bearings and thrust bearings provide excellent steering characteristics with reduced chatter and wander.

Single & Tandem Drive Axles
  • Pinion gear diameter has been increased to compensate for increased engine torque.
  • A new design eliminates the traditional pinion head bearing allowing for a larger main differential capacity.
  • Precision ground gears provide efficient power flow between the gears for quieter operation, high torque input and reduced maintenance.
  • Tandem rear axles are engineered to minimize driveline angle, reducing vibration and maximizing the life of components throughout the whole truck.

AirLiner Front Suspension
Simply put: Freightliner's AirLiner front axle suspension design delivers a smooth ride without compromising ease-of-maintenance. Fleet managers like its box-shaped axle design because it beats average weight by 95 pounds, meaning greater payload capacity. Drivers like it because it reduces steer axle vibration, preventing fatigue and making their ride more comfortable. Couple this with the reduced maintenance afforded by better tire wear, lube-free front spring bushings and a two-piece knuckle, and you'll see why Freightliner's AirLiner front suspension is a system you can't afford to be without.

AirLiner Rear Suspension
There's a reason Freightliner's AirLiner rear suspensions shoulder the weight of more highway and medium-duty construction vehicles in North America than anyone else. With the most advanced design on the road, our family of rear suspension options keeps weights lower and payloads higher. Smart engineering means drivers, and their freight, get a cushioned ride - reducing the possibility of damage and driver fatigue. And maintenance friendly features like double-bonded rubber bushings on moving joints ensure a long life expectancy, and save in maintenance costs year after year.

TufTrac Suspension

The versatile TufTrac suspension was designed to serve a number of vocations including refuse, construction, concrete mixer, asphalt spreader, heavy haul, mining, logging, oil field service and line haul.

Freightliner TufTrac vocational suspensions provide the following features:
  • High articulation for off-highway operations where it’s important to traverse bumps, ridges and washboard without “bottoming out” the suspension.
  • Uniform wheel loading allows your truck to maintain a uniform load over each wheel as the suspension articulates for maximum traction.
  • TufTrac’s combination of rubber-isolated pivot points and parabolic taper-leaf springs ensure a smooth ride, whether loaded or unloaded, minimizing wear and tear on both truck and driver.
